A type of latin square experimental design with controls was used to investigate the effects of 3 treatment variations on the in-store shopping behaviour of supermarket customers. The treatments were: 1.no music 2.slow music 3.fast tempo music. 3 hypotheses were that the tempo of the music would affect the pace of in-store traffic flow of shoppers; the daily gross volume purchased by supermarket customers and the number of shoppers expressing an awareness of the background music after they left the store. The study conducted in a medium size supermarket covered a 9-week period. The research design is described in detail. Results indicate that music tempo variations can significantly affect the pace of in-store traffic flow and dollar sales volume.
